The Academy Announces Planned Departure of Founder and Executive Director Mark Richardson

[Tempe, Arizona, July 2024] – The Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts (AAPA) is announcing the planned departure of our Founder and Executive Director, Mark Richardson, who will be stepping down in May 2025 after serving in his role since 2000.

Mark has been the driving force behind AAPA since its inception, shaping it into the distinguished institution it is today. His passion for the arts, relentless commitment to nurturing talent, and fostering creativity have left an indelible mark on our organization and the countless lives it has touched.

Under Mark’s visionary leadership, AAPA has flourished, becoming a beacon of artistic excellence in our community. His innovative spirit has driven us to new heights, inspiring young performers to push the boundaries of their craft and realize their fullest potential.

One of Mark’s most notable achievements is founding and developing the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps (The Academy). Since its establishment, The Academy has become a symbol of excellence in the marching arts, earning national recognition for its performances and educational programs. The Academy has provided countless young musicians and performers opportunities to develop their skills, build lifelong friendships, and experience the thrill of competitive performance on a national stage. Mark’s leadership has been instrumental in creating a supportive and challenging environment that has allowed The Academy to thrive and grow.

Mark’s decision to step down is driven by his desire to spend more time with his family as his children grow older and to embark on the next chapter of his life, which has been dedicated to music education.

“We are immensely grateful to Mark for his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication over the past 24 years,” said Rich Frazier, Board President at AAPA. “His visionary guidance has been instrumental in shaping AAPA into the thriving community it is today, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come. Mark’s decision to give us ample time to prepare for this transition is a testament to his forethought and dedication to the Academy’s future,”

As we embark on this new chapter, AAPA remains unwavering in its commitment to excellence and innovation, values that Mark instilled. The board is actively searching for a new executive director to join before Mark’s departure, ensuring a smooth transition and continued success.

On behalf of the entire AAPA community, we extend our deepest gratitude to Mark. His unparalleled leadership, unwavering dedication, and profound impact on our organization have been felt by every one of us. Though he may be stepping down from his current role, we look forward to Mark remaining an integral part of the Academy in some capacity in future years. His spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of AAPA, guiding us as we continue to inspire, innovate, and transform lives through the power of the performing arts.
