The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps Welcomes Josh Thye as Executive Director
Tempe, AZ – December 2, 2024 – The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, a nationally
recognized organization dedicated to excellence in music and the performing arts, proudly
announces the appointment of Mr. Josh Thye as Executive Director, effective June 1, 2025.
Mr. Thye brings an impressive portfolio of experience in music education, leadership, and
community engagement. Currently serving as the Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts for
the Tempe Union High School District in Arizona, he holds a Bachelor of Music in Music
Education from the University of Arizona, a Master’s degree in Administration from the
University of Phoenix, and a Master’s in Instrumental Conducting from the American Band
College of Sam Houston State University.
Previously, Mr. Thye spent nearly two decades as Director of Bands at Desert Vista High School
in Phoenix, AZ, where his ensembles achieved national acclaim. Under his leadership, the
Thunder Marching Band earned nine Arizona State Marching Championships and performed at
renowned venues such as the Music for All Festival, Chicago Symphony Hall, and New York’s
Carnegie Hall on four occasions.
Mr. Thye’s innovative contributions to music education include the national pilot program for
United Sound in 2013, an initiative that empowers students with special needs to actively
participate in music ensembles. His dedication has earned him numerous accolades, including
being named a finalist for the Governor’s Arts Award in 2013 and receiving the Tempe Diablos
Excellence in Education Award in 2014.
A proud alumnus of The Academy and the Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts (AAPA), Mr.
Thye performed as a trumpet player in the inaugural Brass and Percussion ensemble that
officially established the AAPA in 2001 as well as its chamber brass ensemble later that year.
Over the past year, Josh Thye has served as the Corps Director of The Academy, where his
exceptional leadership has continued to inspire and enrich the lives of both members and staff.
Through his dedication and vision, he has fostered an environment of growth, excellence, and
community within the organization.

On a personal note, Mr. Thye is married to Jennifer, owner of Imoni Events, and they are the
proud parents of three children: Madelyn, Amelia, and Oliver.
The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps eagerly anticipates Mr. Thye’s leadership in continuing the
organization’s legacy of inspiring young musicians and fostering excellence in the performing
arts.
